Islam in Yoruba land needs reformation, The Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta stated this in a post on Jama’atu Ta’awunil Muslimeen facebook page. He said, “Everything that surrounds us, is not speaking well of us. Internally, we are bleeding, and externally we are facing challenges. We have to win the war within, and also overcome the external forces before our Islam in Yorubaland can take its shape.”
The above assertion was made today, Wednesday, 2nd February 2022 by Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, Ameer Jama’at Taawunil Muslimeen, Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta while featuring on MAHAD Islamic Motivational Movement to explain the roles of Arabic students in curbing social vices in our society.
The Mufti explained that the Islam in Yorubaland had never witnessed any form of reformation and revolution which was similar to the one brought to the north by Uthman Dan Fodio. ” In the far North, he led the struggle to purify Islam, to eradicate idol, and purge all forms of distortion and heretical innovation from religion.
“He preached the teaching of the Quran and Sunnah and encouraged the Muslims of that time to return to orthodox Islam. The struggle did not only has a religious undertone, it was also political. Here in Yorubaland, the struggle we had was mainly on education, to free ourselves from Christian missionary, but the one that involves Islamic activism, like intellectual, political, and economic development has never for once surfaced. This is the reason why all these forms of bid’ah ( innovation) are still rampant among those who practice Islam in the region” he explained.
Grand Mufti urged the Muslims to be careful about the source of their Islamic understandings and also urged them to know where to enroll their children for Arabic education.
He then concluded by calling on Yoruba Muslims to awake for Islamic reformation and revolution, the one that involves political, intellectual, and economic development of Muslims.
