The world is waiting for what happened next as the Taliban announces new Afghanistan government
Taliban-Afghan: On Tuesday, Zabihullah Mujahid announces the new members to oversee the Afghan government.
He said in a press conference that Taliban co-founder Abdul Ghani Baradar will be the deputy leader while Sirajuddin Haqqani has been named as interior minister.
The Taliban also named Mullah Hasan Akhund, as head of Afghanistan’s new government and Sirajuddin Haqqani as interior minister.
People panic as the Haqqani organisation is on a U.S. terrorism list. And Mullah Hasan is an associate of the movement founded by the late Mullah Omar.
However, Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, son of Mullah Omar, was named as defence minister.
Sirajuddin Haqqani (the new interior minister) is the son of the founder of the Haqqani network, the group which the United States refers to as a terrorist organisation.
The Afghan new minister is one of the FBI’s most wanted men due to his involvement in suicide attacks and some relationship with Al Qaeda.
All the new government members were in an acting capacity, Mujahid – Taliban spokesman said.
That said, most still don’t know what position the Taliban supreme leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada will hold in the new government.
Charles Stratford from Al Jazeera’s Kabul said most of the members appointed were “old faces”.
Also, Jen Psaki – the white House spokeswoman told reporters that there would be no recognition of the Taliban government soon.
