Is the Month of Safar Means Unlucky?
Referring to the month of Safar as unlucky is common among the people of Jaahiliyyah and it is wonderful that some Muslims still believe such this today.
To understand how critical it is, let look through this hadith.
It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “No ‘adwaa [transmission of infectious disease without the permission of Allah], no tiyarah [superstitious belief in bird omens], no haamah [refers to a Jaahili Arab tradition described variously as a worm that infests the grave of a murder victim until he is avenged; an owl; or the bones of a dead person turned into a bird that could fly], and no Safar [the month of Safar was regarded as unlucky in the Jaahiliyyah]. But flee from the leper as you would flee from a lion.”
Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5387) and Muslim (2220).
Several explanations were given for “Safar” [in this hadith] said Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him)
It was well-known that the Arabs of Jaaililyyah regard the month of Safar as unlucky.
The Arabs of the jahiliyyah believe that it was an internal disease affecting camels, that may be transmitted from one camel to another.
They would delay the month of Muharram as sacred, and defer it until Safar, regarding it as not sacred one year, and regarding it as sacred the following year.
However, neither months nor time have any impact on the decrees of Allah (may He be glorified and exalted).
That said, Muslims should understand that the month of Safar is like any other month, by Allah’s will good and bad may be decreed.
The Month of Safar Is Neither A Good Month Nor A Bad Month
‘It was completed on the twenty-fifth of the good month of Safar.’ This was the usual utterance of some people, however, as explained above Safar is neither a good month nor a bad month, but rather a month where good or bad things can happen according to the will of Allah.
‘This comes under the heading of fighting bid‘ah with bid‘ah.’
The messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) advised us to put trust in Allah alone and to be steadfast while not feeling weak when faced with any difficulties.
Majmoo‘ Fataawa ash-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (2/113, 115)
